Getting ready for my closeup
I had just finished writing my nutrition book this past winter, and shortly after sending in the final edits, it was time to schedule a photo shoot.
Incredibly, my publisher had upped the ante, adding more color photos and surprise, the book was now hard-cover. And yet, there’s nothing like the words “photo shoot” to instill abject fear and worry into any woman’s heart. Seriously..Why didn’t I do this last summer?
For me, it was the end of a long, cold, deep and snowy winter. Days, no, weeks, honestly months, of sitting behind my computer, typing, had blessed me with extra pounds (thank you). My skin wasn’t glowing like it should (ugh). And the inside air had left it feeling dry and kinda crinkly (that can’t be me).
I was exhausted; my adrenals were shot and I even went and got tested for Lyme and Mono. I had to radically alter my calendar, allowing for my tired state, and that bothered me too.
I was spent. My husband was worried. And on top of it, I wondered how the heck I was going to look halfway decent on the cover of my book. I didn’t have a choice, did I?
How was I ever going to look like it was summer for this shoot, when ice storms kept hailing down on our farm? And most importantly, how did I let this happen? Wasn’t I supposed to know how to keep my self trim, glowing, and healthy?
Nutrition coaches gain weight, get exhausted, and feel like crap sometimes too. I’ve heard that the best teachers teach what they need most to learn. Amen, sister!
I am SO not perfect, but hopefully I can recognize the downward slide when I see it, and pull myself out, up, and soon, back to normal.
This is what I did to get myself ready for my photo shoot. And for life in general. Stuff happens, but I wanted to share this with you so you’d know. Maybe you’re having a tough time shaking the winter too?
1) Move. It was really hard to force myself out to my favorite Barre Class, so I started by just moving more. Walks with periods of running seemed to be easy to do, so I walked out the door. I didn’t make it a big deal about it, or drive a half hour each way. Some days I wore my Hunter boots, or snow boots, but I went anyway. Fresh air, and movement are a great combo. I slopped through the mud, and let it rain. It felt good to be moving again.
2) Hydrate. I mentioned that my skin felt dry; well, all that heat and stale air had really done a number on it. I began drinking 2 pitchers of clean, filtered water a day, and I spiced it up with lemon (for detoxification), cayenne pepper (for a metabolism boost) and a touch of stevia (so it tastes like a spicy lemonade). My skin immediately saw the results, and the under-eye puffy-dry action seemed to go away within a few days or so.
3) Reduce Inflammation. I eat a clean diet, year round, but some sugar (organic, tho) had found it’s way in. Need an afternoon organic chocolate bar? The occasional glass of wine with dinner? And mindless eating while working had taken their toll. Even if it was healthy. So I ordered my favorite cleanse kit from my friend, Frank Lipman, MD (did you know he wrote the forward for my book?). Within weeks my energy was higher, and I felt pretty darn good. Much better, I had lost a good 7 pounds to boot.
4) Lose the Puff. Several days prior to the shoot, I was stressed out. I still wasn’t at my ideal weight, and I knew that it was now impossible, so I had to practice acceptance. (There’s so much more to say on this subject, so I’ll save that for another blog.) Let’s just say that adding in cranberries, in their whole form in smoothies, and as capsules for a few days really helped me shed some puff. Cranberries and cranberry supplements are often recommended for Urinary Tract infections, overall urinary health, and even gum health, but this berry is a wonderful diuretic if you’re feeling puffy, or if you have a date with a camera in a few days. Caution: cranberry can effect some prescription drugs, so check with your doctor.
5) Get Your Greens. My skin needed color, vitality and glow, big time. I knew I had to amp up my green juice right away, so I got going. I made sure I had at least 32 ounces of green juice or smoothies a day, and salads too (did you see my blog on fresh vegetables and beauty?).
The bottom line? Well, you tell me. I’m happy with my shots. I’m not at my skinny weight, but like I said, I’m practicing acceptance. Imperfection is a wonderful thing. Walking my walk, living my life, and being able to share with you makes it all come together and make sense.
That cleanse I did? It made me realize that you might need it too. So, I’m offering my program, Cleanse with Benefits this May, before I hit the road for my book launch. I hope you’ll join me next month, we begin May 12th, and Dr. Lipman will be on board too. Be sure to open next week’s email with all the details!
*And…Save the date, September 15, 2014. That’s when she ships out (my book that is). Oh, and it’s available for pre-order now, on Amazon. Just for you.

This morning I ate Not out of bed yet!.
Hi Holli!
Long time reader. First time commenter. I wanted to say that this is one of the best articles I’ve read from you ever! I’m a health coach too and found it SO encouraging to see that I’m not alone. So thank you for sharing your struggles.
You must know that you are beautiful and that others would be thrilled to be your non-ideal weight. Right? I would have loved to see a before and after shot.
Ok and finally, I need to read your post on acceptance ASAP. If you haven’t already written it please do it soon! I want to know how to find acceptance too.
Thank you so much again. Congratulations on your book! I can’t wait to read it.
XOXO,
Brianna
Ps-do you work with a health coach? Is that something that you recommend for other health coaches?
Holli / 4.17.2014
Hi Brianna, thank you so much for your post. It means a great deal to have you say that. I’m getting tired of everyone making it sound and look so easy and effortless, right? Whether it’s our health, or fitness, or weight, it takes organization, dedication and some effort. It doesn’t have to be hard or painful, that’s not my point or the goal for sure, but it does call for attention to it. And it also really calls for some forgiveness, support and maybe even collaboration. The acceptance blog began bubbling up during all of this, and I’ll post it soon. I highly recommend working with a health coach. I’ve worked with health coaches over the years, and I coach several health coaches too. A local RD/coach/herbalist shared her tip on cranberry with me, for example. And every time I work with Dr. Lipman I get inspired to try something new. XO Thanks, again, Brianna
Joan / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate greenie or will drink.
Just pre-ordered your book Holli.
Holli / 4.17.2014
Hi Joan! Thank you, that’s great to hear. This is a soft opening, as they say, since we’re still refining things but people on social networking were talking about it and sharing it, and I didn’t want my subscribers to be the last to hear. I’ll share the final cover when it’s all ready, but it’ll be close to what’s currently on Amazon. Again, thanks for reading and ordering, Joan. XO H.

Jennifer / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate my Berry Cacao smoothie..
Hi Holli,
I, too, am a health coach. I also live in northern Va and this winter has been brutal. I’ve gained a little, lacked energy and motivation. Just a couple of weeks ago, I recommitted to my morning smoothies. They had become less consistent. On most days, a cold drink was the last thing I wanted. I think I’m noticing an upswing, but it is hard. Thank you for this article. Of course, none of us preach perfection. But, I know for me at least, I feel like I won’t be taken seriously by clients if I don’t look the part. But, it’s just as important for them to know that we struggle, too. And, it’s from that place that we can help them the most. Can’t wait to read your book. I’m sure your pics will be beautiful! Thanks again. Jennifer
Holli / 4.17.2014
Jennifer, we’ll have to meet one day soon:) I’m really glad this resonated. I like how you say “it’s from this place that we can help them the most”. That’s the truth, and in writing my book, I realized that my struggles and challenges in life are what led me to this, not having it figured out, perfectly, along the way. Lot’s of love, enjoy the cherry blossoms. H. XO
Frith / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate a blueberry smoothy.
Holli –
As usual your post was right on! I was pulling out summer clothes last night for a short trip south, only to find that many cherished pants were too snug! All I could think was how could I have let that happen over the last couple of months of dreary, uninspiring weather? But it did and so I hauled myself to barre class early this morning promising to get my glow back. It’s encouraging to know that I am not alone : ) Can’t wait to see your book. Congratulations!
xo, Frith
Holli / 4.17.2014
Hi Frith, I'm glad you got yourself to Barre! Good for you. We're all emerging from this, and in just a couple of weeks, you can make some significant improvements. You know that. :) Keep moving forward, I'm right there with you. XO H.
Andrea / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate whole foods smoothie.
Holli,
Thanks so much for this wonderful post. I live in the northeast as well and it was a long hard winter and like you, I let the pounds creep back on while sitting at my computer. I have been cleansing and it feels great to do in the spring. As a health coach I can completely relate to wanting to look and feel my best as a representation of what I do but we are all human and it’s not always perfect. Love that you shared that! Can’t wait to read your book. XO, Andrea
Holli / 4.17.2014
Andrea, I’m glad you can relate. And I’ll say I’m feeling much better about things after reading that I’m not alone in feeling the way I do. Thanks for sharing your story, too. XO H.
Katherine / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate Buckwheat porridge, hey it's 30 degrees in VA..
Thanks Holli for your post. For us westerners it’s the instant gratification and oh I’ll just take a pill mentality. This winter was a struggle for me to get out of hibernation mode. But I agree totally with Holli, get up dust yourself off and start moving. I have been working on bringing my awareness to my actions, not my judgement. I have started to create a sacred space around my eating. I put all my electronics away, yes that includes the tv on in the background. I then practice mindfull eating. I eat less and it tastes so much better. I can’t wait to see the book.
Much love,
Katherine
Holli / 4.17.2014
Katherine, you are so good at this. And so right-on. There is no quick pill. I like your idea about removing electronics while eating, focus, mindfulness. Thanks for sharing that with us. XO Love, H.
Tara / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate A chocolate/blueberry/maca/kale smoothie.
Holli, This was a great article! You are so beautiful and would have looked amazing even without all of those useful and health-promoting actions! It was so timely for me, too, as this morning I had to take a few ‘selfies’ of my face without makeup for a before and after skincare regimen I am sampling. I wanted to cry when I saw the first photo and took a bunch to try and get a good one. Then I wanted to crawl into a hole and hide. Finally I decided that I needed to accept my age and all that comes along with it, including fine lines and wrinkles, and just continue to take good care of my body so I can look and feel my best. Your article came at just the right time. Thanks! Looking forward to your book.
Blessings,
Tara
Holli / 4.18.2014
OMG! Right? It starts to get crazy. We do our best. It’s all we can do. I love my life, I’m grateful, and it’s real. The funny thing is, it’s not really age related. I remember feeling this way in my 20’s. I agree with everything you said. Keep up the good work, the good thoughts It’s working. XO H.
Sonya / 4.17.2014
This morning I ate , well drank a blueberry smoothie!.
Holli, I love your transparency and thank you for sharing your thoughts and struggles. You really keep it real and that is what I love so much about your blog and newsletters. I too, am a health coach and this was EXACTLY what I needed to hear TODAY!!! So once again, thank you for your encouragement and love you always exude toward your readers. We love you Holli and you look gorgeous dahling!!!!!! 🙂
Holli / 4.18.2014
Sonya, I soooo appreciate this. Here’s to keepin’ it real. You’re wonderful. XO H.
Cherith / 4.18.2014
Holli, These are great tips as we all can so easily slip into times when we can’t keep up our best routines. Thank you! As for your photos – I think you look beautiful! You look genuinely happy and relaxed. Your smile holds much warmth. Congrats on your book and your dedication to seeing it to completion as well. We will all benefit from your work, example and guidance. Happy Dance!!! Cherith
Holli / 4.18.2014
Sweet. Sweet of you to say, and thank you, Cherith. I appreciate it. XO big hug and I appreciate you. H.
Mary / 4.22.2014
This morning I ate 2 poached eggs, multigrain toast and an orange..
Holli,
Actually you look healthy and gorgeous and naturally beautiful in the picture that accompanied this blog. You look like you’re at a perfect weight!
Holli / 5.6.2014
Thank you, Mary:) Kind words are most appreciated. XO
Janice / 4.25.2014
This morning I ate Coffee, blueberries, and a rice cake.
Is there any reason why you wouldn’t recommend organic pure cranberry juice if you’re trying to get cranberry in?
Holli / 5.6.2014
Hi Janice,
Cranberry capsules are more concentrated, and sometimes more convenient, but pure organic cranberry juice is great. I like adding a splash to water during the day for those same benefits. I also love adding whole cranberries to my smoothies.
