3 Ways to Transition Your Diet to Fall

I’m staring out at the first hint of yellow leaves on the maple tree outside my window, and I turned the heat on last night; my white linen pants must be retired, (sigh!) and I’m pulling out the Dutch oven to make soup.

Friends, fall is here. And that means it’s time to tweak your Nutritional Style.

Your body is programmed, just like mine, to begin craving warming foods when the weather turns chilly. Our cellular DNA knows what’s coming; winter will return, and so will the cold.

Allow me to help you prepare with three easy ways to adjust your Nutritional Style to colder weather, starting now.

1) Switch from Juice to Smoothie

You know I am one green-juice-toting kind of gal, but when the weather turns chilly, I reach for my high speed Vitamix. Blending your vegetables, greens, and fruits retains the fiber, slows your digestion, and helps keep you warmer. Adding a shake or two of certain spices is also warming (see below for ideas). Remember the 4 to 1 ratio of veggies to fruit. Here’s a handy Smoothie Formula to make sure you get it right, each time.
Here are two of my favorite green smoothies, here, and here.

2) Eat Seasonal Produce

Yada, yada, eat seasonally, you’ve heard it before, but do you know why reaching for pumpkin, squashes, and sweet potatoes, right now, makes a lot of sense?

The Ayurvedic tradition calls them “sticky” foods, and in a nutshell they warm your digestion, and satisfy you especially in colder weather; they’re exactly what your body wants and needs.

I’m sharing a new Flexible Vegetarian recipe for stuffed sweet potatoes, here.

3) Spice it up

One of the easiest things that I do in the fall is spice up my food and smoothies. Some spices affect your digestion, like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, or turmeric, heating you from the inside out. It’s no wonder that pumpkin pie is the perfect food (did I just say that?!).

Here’s a delicious pumpkin smoothie, that’ll help satisfy your high sugar, and gluten-filled, pumpkin pie craving.

In what ways have you noticed your cravings have changed with the chilly weather? Have you dusted off your Dutch oven, or slow cooker?
