Nutritional Style: Losing Weight and Looking Great

Many women come to me for help losing weight, and there’s something that I ask of them along the way. That’s to try to look their best each day. So many women think that they need to lose weight first before they can spend money on themselves and the message that this sends is “you aren’t good enough”. The act of waiting before you are worthy to look good can set you up for failure. Imagine that comfy dress that feels like a nightgown and “hides” your tummy all too well. Wearing it to dinner after dinner allows you to eat more, because you think no one will notice. Walking around all day in that big black blazer or attending your child’s school meetings in your baggy workout clothes does not support your weight loss efforts. Quite the opposite is true.

I have had clients show up looking pretty messy as they are losing their weight. No makeup, a no-thought ponytail and some old clothes that look at least a size too big. They justify it by saying, “I don’t want to shop for clothes until I lose more… I’m not at my goal..” and so on. I totally disagree with that way of thinking and I encourage my clients to treat themselves along the way in their weight loss path. In today’s world we have major designers showcasing collections at Target, and TJ Maxx selling designer goods for a fraction of cost. What is your real excuse?

I’ve gone so far as to shop on line and email my clients ideas, to encourage them to invest in themselves. I often suggest that they decide on an affordable budget, ( let’s say $125. ) and send them to TJ Maxx. They can buy a perfectly nice pair of black pants or a skirt and several cute tops that will work for them and probably have money left for a fabulous necklace. Most importantly, as you “outgrow” those clothes, give them to good will or to a friend. It’s important to get rid of them and move on to a smaller size.

And when you hit your target weight, plan the big splurge. Head to Neimans or Nordstroms and invest in your celebration outfit. Let’s face it, losing weight takes time and dedication to do it in a healthy fashion . But the best reason to invest in yourself is that you are worth it, every step of the way.

Here are 3 easy “Lose Weight , Look Great” Rules:

1) Hair– Make sure your hair color and cut flatter you; your body as well as your face. Starting a weight loss program? Now is a great time to invest in yourself and your hair.. A new style can flatter your face and some highlights might make you feel years younger and fresher. Plan on which days you will be washing and styling your hair and stick to them. No more “bad hair days” allowed on this weight loss plan!

2) Makeup– We are not talking Barbie, but take some time for a tinted moisturizer to smooth out skin tone. Most women over 30 need under eye concealer. Mascara is a must. Finish with blush or a light bronzer for some color and a sheer lipstick or gloss. Ever run into someone you know at the grocery store and want to hide? This goes for the grocery store, and school meetings, too. Your confidence will soar if you feel better about your appearance. And confidence leads to weight loss and making smart choices all day .

3) Dress for Success– OK, I admire your working out each morning or at least having the intention to. But take the time to change into something following your workout. Bring an easy casual dress and sandals. Absolutely no time? Then take the time to put on a little bit of makeup, fluff out your hair and wear some cute yoga or workout clothes. There are lots of very reasonable workout clothes options out there.

Everyday attire for the business woman? Put together an easy “uniform” for the office that will pop some color into your day and don’t forget the power of accessories. A large necklace, so “in” right now, will draw the eye upwards towards your pretty face. Bottom heavy? Go for a dark bottom and color on top. Top heavy? Show off your legs and choose a tapered top that will skim your body, not hug. Avoid clingy fabrics, and remember that shape wear is your friend!
