Travel Tips: Maintaining Your Nutritional Style Away From Home
I’m writing this blog from India! I’m here to attend my client’s wedding, (I coach both bride and groom) so this is a great opportunity to practice what I preach when it comes to staying healthy while traveling. Especially in a country where eating raw fruits and vegetables is not recommended, for the most part, due to growing practices and water safety.
How did I stay healthy, energetic and have a blast while overseas?
Try these 7 Travel Tips to maintain your Nutritional Style.
1) Keep your blood sugar stable on long trips by eating frequent small meals. Maintaining stable blood sugar will help to avoid becoming overtired, headaches and the dreaded grumpies.
2) Carry healthy snacks that can double as a meal if you need it. I keep a cache of bars in my carry on and my handbag and make sure to replenish them as needed. (This is a life saver.) We love larabars, (http://www.larabar.com/) or organic bars, (http://www.organicfoodbar.com/) both available on line or at Whole Foods Market.
3) Hydrate prior to getting on a long flight by increasing your water a day or two in advance of leaving. It’s not enough to just drink more during the flight. This helps to avoid bloating and puffy feet. (so your cute shoes fit when your arrive!)
4) Avoid excessive caffeine during travel. It’s tempting to have more coffee as you adjust to time zones and jet lag, but coffee is dehydrating , can cause headaches, and rebound you into an even more tired state.
5) Minimize sugary snacks and processed carbs. Both metabolize as sugar and will elevate your mood quickly to drop you down.
6) Get your rest to keep your body and moods balanced. Sometimes we need to say “no” to the last glass of champagne or fun conversation, even while on vacation. (sorry) Try carrying Peter Gilams “Calm” drink in packets, a gentle lemon flavored magnesium powder that you mix with warm water at bedtime. (http://www.petergillam.com/)
7) Try to stay “regular”. If you need help, bring herbal cleanse capsules or “Smooth Move” tea. (www.traditionalmedicinals.com/smoothmove/)-Being constipated will affect your body’s balance, make you uncomfortable and definitely affect your good moods. It’s important to pay attention to this one.
