In My… Kitchen Drawer

I spend varying amounts of time in my kitchen. Sometimes I go on cooking binges and serve home cooked meals every day, for weeks on end, and other times I do whatever is easy and fast—but always healthy.

No matter what my mood or timeframe, I absolutely rely on my favorite tools. In fact, I’ve formed an emotional attachment to some of them. I’m in love with the smooth wood of my avocado spoon, and the cheery yellow of my lemon squeezer—I wouldn’t trade them for something easier. And don’t even think about touching my china duck measuring cups.

Here are the most utilized tools you’ll find in my kitchen drawers.

1. Stainless Steel Shaker
This old- school shaker from Bed, Bath and Beyond looks like the parmesan shakers in pizza parlors of my childhood, it now holds cinnamon that we sprinkle in smoothies, and on sweet potatoes and banana “ice cream”. Yum.

2. Microplane Grater
Used for zesting lemons and limes, or grating ginger for stir fry, this is a cool professional tool to have. The other day I used to to grind my own nutmeg. Fancy!

3. Organic Hand Lotion
Standing by my sink at all times, I try to remember to use it; I wash my hands a lot.

2. Hand grater by OXO
Speaking of parmesan, my husband enjoys his grated sheep cheese ever so often, and this cute hand held grater does the trick.

5. Natural Scrubber
We avoid toxic soaps, so this loofah scrubber from Whole Foods is for gunky plates. AND I love the cute eggplant shape.

6. Hand Juicer
I adore my lemon yellow juicer from Williams Sonoma– it makes me happy, squeezing lemons almost every day.

7. Tongs by Cuisipro
One of my favorite new tools; I have them in every color. Like a comfy pair of shoes, use them for everything.

8. Measuring Cups
If it makes me smile, it’s a bonus. One of my best gal pals gave me this adorable set of china duck measuring cups several years
ago. I treasure them.

9. The Red Spoon by Tovolo
This is like having a favorite child. I love the high heat safety of the spoon, and the nice firm grasp of the handle. The red makes me happy too.

10. Grill Scrubber
Honestly, this is my husbands. He grills on the range, and then uses this little scrubby to remove all the residue.

11. Ice Cream Scoop
My husband loves modern design, and for some reason we have multiple ice cream scoops, in different cool styles. We use this for my healthy banana “ice cream”, or avocado/lime sorbet.

12. Paring Knife
This one is by Kuhn Rikon of Switzerland. If I could use this for everything I do in the kitchen I would. I love the efficiency, and overall feel of this knife. Oh, and the red.

13. ‘Grabber’
I don’t know what this piece of rubber is called, we call it the grabber, but it allows me to open difficult- to- open jars. I can’t live without my grabber.

14. Avocado Spoon
OK, this is my favorite tool. I adore this smooth olive wood spoon, and the way it scoops out the avocado in one try … gently.

15. Swiss Vegetable Peeler
I bought my first peeler like this when I attended the Natural Gourmet Cooking School, and love it for its small design and the efficient way it peels anything. Carrots, sweet potatoes, you name it.

16. Honey Wand
I confess, we rarely use this, but I love the way it looks. I dream of using this someday to serve honey out of a little glass honeypot, for an elegant breakfast, watching happy guests drizzle local, raw honey on their gluten free scone. Sigh.

17. Whisk
We have whisks in all sizes and shapes, once again this is my man’s tool. He loves to whisk things. Maybe it’s a scandinavian thing.

18. ‘The Black Spoon’
I got this from Epicurean. It’s dramatic, and it stirs coffee in a french press (his), and stevia lemonade (hers), perfectly

19. China Measuring Spoons
There’s pleasure in beauty, even in the little things. I found these surprisingly at West Elm.
