Eat that cookie, drink that prosecco!
I’m over the white-knuckle nutrition approach to holidays. The shame and regret that I hear around the dinner table makes sharing a meal far from nourishing. And sad to say, it’s us women that seem to do it most. Do you know any men who approach a generous holiday buffet saying, “Oh I really shouldn’t. I’m being so BAD”. Probably not. At least not very many. But many ladies do, and our girls too! I’m tired of it. It’s time to change.
Cultures around the world enjoy holidays, feast days, and celebrations without this good/bad philosophy that modern western women have created. And we all know how French women stay thin, they do not deny themselves pleasure. Nor should you.
Our weight is not as simple as calories in, calories out. Emotions, too, play a role. There’s science to back this up.
» Hesitating and beating ourselves up over food choices creates stress.
» Stress, the common result of guilt, affects us physically; disturbing the digestion, lowering our metabolism, and blocking the absorption of essential nutrients.
» Stress effects your hormones, and your fat burning capabilities. As a result, this causes you to store fat, rather than burn it.
» All that stress, from the “bad” feelings over your foods, causes your body to hold on to weight, because you’re telling your body that it’s threatened in some way.
SO, this holiday (or birthday, or any special day) take “BAD” out of your vocabulary. Instead practice enjoying your food. Delight in that homemade brownie, or a favorite egg-nog for breakfast. Whatever it is, do it without guilt or shame.
I want you to live the healthiest life possible, to be inspired by healthful, organic, delicious foods and to delight in enjoying the vibrant feeling that comes with a clear mind and body. But there’s no place for guilt and shame in that picture.
It’s just one day.
Or two.
Cheers!
