Holli on Capital Hill
When my alma mater, The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, asked me to participate in a health initiative with the US Congress, I was happy to help. Congressman Tim Ryan, whose office was well represented at my recent workshop, had this to say:
“The United States faces a health crisis due in large part to the prevalence of costly chronic conditions, which are largely brought on by poor lifestyle choices… It is vital that Health and Wellness Coaches continue to expand their good work, the nation needs it … I want to congratulate the progress made by Health and Wellness Coaches and wish them the best during National Health and Wellness Coach Week.”
So in August, I led a “Smoothies & Superfoods 101” workshop with many Congressional offices in attendance. Staff members were enthusiastic to learn about the importance of health coaching and, of course, to taste and enjoy my (delicious) super concoctions. We explored ways to eat healthy on a budget, and on the go… because our congress is full of busy, hard working people (grab my new Athletic Green smoothie recipe here).
Fellow IIN grad Kerrie Martin led a “Slow on the Go” workshop educating members of Congress on effective and proven technique to lower stress levels and increase productivity. Kerrie made it clear that controlling stress in a holistic way is just as important as eating a healthy breakfast.
Here’s the thing: our country is still facing rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and chronic illnesses, many of which can be helped or controlled by a healthier diet.
I’m thrilled with the support we’ve received in Washington, DC so far, and it’s been so much fun working downtown to share our message. Health Coaching is getting more and more recognition for the unique role it can play in your health. Behavioral changes, and approaching your health with a holistic approach is proving to be the way to go.
