Sweet Potato Fries

Did you know that sweet root vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and butternut squash are not only high in vitamin A and beta carotene ( think gorgeous skin!) but also a great way to keep cravings at bay? They’re high in natural sugars- the good kind that slowly elevate your blood sugar to keep you from wanting refined processed sugars later. I often recommend increasing root vegetables to my clients that suffer from sugar cravings. This secret really works. Here’s a recipe for one of my favorite and easy ways to enjoy a delicious sweet potato. This recipe works just as well for white potatoes or carrots. Sweet Potato Fries 2-3 large sweet potatoes (and/or carrots or white potatoes) olive oil sea salt cinnamon optional (for sweet potatoes or carrots) Grade B maple syrup Peel potatoes or carrots and slice into long strips. Place in a mixing bowl and toss with enough olive oil and sea salt to coat. You can add cinnamon for an even sweeter treat. Spread onto a baking sheet and place in a pre-heated oven at 350° F. Roast until golden brown, times will vary. Turn once if you are able to without breaking. Dip in…

DC Beauty Examiner: Restyle the Way You Eat

Restyle the Way You Eat with Nutritional Stylist Holli Thompson As seen today in the ‘DC Beauty Examiner’ Nutritionist Holli Thompson helps her clients lose weight, get off medications for chronic illnesses and heal their bodies through her Nutritional Style program. Here she shares some elements of her program that will shift you into a lifestyle that can help you become physically and mentally healthy. Eating healthy doesn’t only mean cutting back on fat and reducing the amount of sugar you eat. It’s also important to eat more whole, non-processed and non-heated foods. “Replace empty calories with high vibration superfoods like kale, quinoa and aloe vera” Thompson says. Raw natural foods are high in water content, high in fiber and high in micronutrients. If you want to have more energy and feel healthier, Thompson is offering a new teleseries of customized anti-aging cleanses available in October. The theory behind cleansing regimes are that if you stop eating solid food for several days the toxins are released into the bloodstream and come out through the skin or digestive tract. As a result, the liver starts working more effectively because it is not burdened by processed food. Cleansers say they feel better, have…

Preventing Colds and Flu This Year

It’s September and I’m talking about flu and colds, but I want to share some really important things to do right NOW that will impact your Fall/Winter health- and that applies to your family too. I promise you’ll be happy you did. Strengthening our immunity is crucial to preventing colds and flu, and it doesn’t happen overnight. That’s why you need to start now.  You’ll be ready when your friends start sneezing! The Bonus?  These 3 tips are all anti-aging as well! Here are my three early Fall tips for strengthening your Immunity. 1) Probiotics The word probiotic means “for life”, and refer to the healthy bacteria that naturally grow in your intestines.  Probiotics boost your immunity, improve your digestion, and fight infection yet sadly, most of us are deficient.  Our modern lifestyle, antibiotic use, processed foods and sugar deplete these necessary bacteria. We can try to get these healthy bacteria from our food, but in today’s world it’s difficult.  Beneficial food sources would be fresh sauerkraut, probiotic rich, low-sugar organic yogurt or kefir, or homemade kombucha tea.  But for most of us, eating large enough quantities of these foods in not realistic. Probiotics have also been helpful with weight…

Nutritional Style: Healthy Lunches for Kids

The lunch box aisles at Target and Whole Foods look like a bomb went off. The Mom have been there, in a frantic effort to ready their kids for the new school year ahead.  Hopefully they are thinking about healthy lunches to pack inside those new boxes. Our First Lady’s new inititative, “Let’s Move!” has shined a light on the obesity epidemic in America.  With up to 30% of all kids in America obese, and a 98% increase in obesity in kids age 9-11 since 1960, we have a big problem on our hands. Let’s Move! And Michelle Obama call for some basic nutritional measures: Reduce Fat, Sugar, and Salt, and increase Whole Grains, while DOUBLEING the amount of Produce- Fruits and Vegetables. While simple, these guidelines are what it’s all about. Here are some healthy, easy choices to help this School Year. Our choice for Lunchbox this year is from Lunchopolis.. www.lunchopolis.com/ 1) Main Course  We want to add in grains and fiber and veggies where we can with a sandwich or soup. Sandwich- I really like Almond Butter for a healthy choice and Organic Jam.  The bread I chose is Udi’s, udisglutenfree.com/ppc-gluten-free-udis, a delicious gluten free option.  Another…
