Bye Bye Stress: Disconnect
I recently filmed a video for a client in New York City on managing and avoiding stress. Geared towards millenials, we came up with several new ways to help you keep your cool. Naturally I began to incorporate those changes right away and today I’m sharing them with you.
This is the first in a series to help you end 2017 in stress free style.
A friend of mind has a great saying, “Disconnect to Reconnect” – Disconnect from your electronics and life in general in order to reconnect with nature, friends and family. Smart, right? So take these to heart, starting today.
Stop and smell the roses. Don’t we all need to slow down, and enjoy the moment? So forget about the future and everything you have to do for at least 10 minutes a day. Take a walk in a park, sit on the closest bench, head out the door and look up at the sky. Read something fun, pet your dog, lie down on the sofa, enjoy a slow, savory lunch. Smell a rose!
Timeouts improve productivity. Removing yourself from all electronics at regular intervals will help clear your mind for better performance. Set a timer to remind you to stand up and breathe every hour while you’re working. Step away from the computer, and phone. Stretch, move, pour some tea.
Color. As in color in an adult coloring book. While researching new ways to reduce stress, I learned that Kate Middleton is a huge fan of adult coloring books. I even ordered her favorite coloring book to test it out. Consider me hooked. Some of my friends make fun of me on this one, but it’s a form of meditation and I love it. And yes, it brings out the former art student in me..One side of your brain apparently shuts down to allow your creativity to flow. I force myself to do this each day when I’m feeling unable to focus. It calms me down and brings me back to center.
See your BFF. Friends aren’t just fun; being with your best buddies can reduce the production of cortisol, according to a study in middle school children. And I don’t mean call them on the phone; actually seeing them in person makes a big difference. That’s great for your weight, emotions, and overall health. So go see your sweet bff today.
