Congress, Prevention, Your health

Did you know that I’ve been working with our US Congress this past year?

Just one year ago, along with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, we began lobbying our Congress to recognize the importance of healthy living and working with a health coach. Here we were just a year ago!

We passed a Health Coach Resolution in December, 2015, signed by members of Congress, and supported wholeheartedly by some key players in our nations capitol. It was a significant achievement.

Personally, I’ve had the opportunity to teach multiple classes and workshops, coach individuals, and even talk to a group of about 100 Congressional members about our goals. See what that was like, right here.

This past spring I shared my book, Discover Your Nutritional Style, and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, at a Health Fair at the Capitol building and had the opportunity to work with members from about 25 states.

We’ve been working hard to get the message out there. And I’m happy to say that many of the people that I’ve personally worked with this past year have made huge progress in their own health, appearance and weight. Bravo for that.

You and I both know that it’s not easy to make the right choices in our food each day, to exercise consistently, and to live holistically to support our well being. Not at all!

Working with such a huge, diverse group for a year has given me some insight, and allowed me to distill it down to some key factors.

Ready? Here are some reminders, and new insights to inspire you, today.

1. Buy local, buy organic.

My new friends that work on Capitol Hill come from all over the US, and some of them don’t have access to stores like Whole Foods, or a local healthy market.

More importantly, many of them just can’t afford the price of shopping in those places.

So what I said to them was this…Do your best.

Eat locally, buy from local farms whenever you can, even if the produce is not certified organic. Most local farmers use less pesticides and shun preservatives if their crop is not being loaded into a huge truck to travel across the country.

To locate farmers markets near you, try this Local farmers markets near you.

2. Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food. -Hippocrates

I’ll never suggest you go off of any medication, but I will suggest that before you consider taking a new optional medication, please improve your diet, lose the weight, and get regular exercise.

It works. Studies, anecdotal evidence–it all shows success.

Weight loss and exercise can help with blood sugar issues, blood pressure issues, depression, focus, joint pain, and more.

I say, do what you can.

3. Hydrate, move, breathe, repeat.

This mantra belongs to one of my team members. She was having many health issues, and after seeing a multitude of doctors and health practitioners, holistic and otherwise, she reduced it down to this.

Drink more water, get more exercise, meditate and breathe. Do it again, tomorrow.
(Love you RA!)

4. Laugh and love.

This is one I’ve always believed in. I’ll be the first to watch comedies on TV, or go to a ridiculous movie. This past weekend I saw Capitol Intelligence with Kevin Hart and The Rock. Honestly, it was so bad but I laughed through the entire movie.

Reach out to friends, loved ones, your mom! Let them know how you feel.

Life can be short, friends. I’ve learned that in the past two years. Life can be way too short. So don’t wait to tell her or him you love them.

5. Call a Health Coach.

We all need help. I’ve hired Health Coaches along the way, and I’ve worked with Integrated Medical Doctors beside them. It can help to have someone trained to listen, to support, and to hold you accountable.

It’s the work I do best.

I’m an agent of change, and I have years of happy clients to prove it.

You are welcome to sign up to work with me here. I have times this summer available, but don’t wait until you’re ready.

Remember #4. Life is short.

Let’s do this, together.
