Hemp Milk

Hemp seeds are a balanced protein source and a great way to ensure that you’re getting the protein you need daily.

These small and mild tasting seeds contain all of the amino acids necessary, making them ideal for vegans and raw foodists. Hemp also provides magnesium, iron and potassium; minerals we’re often lacking in.

I use hemp seeds in my smoothies for added protein, and I use them to top to my salads almost every day. My husband loves hemp seeds on his morning granola, and my son thinks they taste like pine nuts!

If you haven’t discovered this tasty seed yet, now’s the time. Here’s my favorite recipe for hemp milk…

Ingredients:
2 cups water
1/2 cup hemp seeds
1 dropper liquid stevia OR 1 tbsp coconut sugar to taste
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Possible additions, depending on your taste level (I mean taste buds!):  cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, or all three.  You can also add raw cacao to create a chocolate milk.

Preparation:

Add ingredients to your high speed blender and blend.  Adjust your seasonings and sweetness level. You can strain the milk through a nut milk bag (purchased at your local health food store) or use a cheesecloth.

I prefer mine not strained; in the Vitamix you might get a mild “grit” at the bottom when ingredients settle, but I find that if I mix it prior to using it doesn’t bother me.  And I don’t want to strain out that beneficial fiber!
