In My… (Fall) Medicine Cabinet

In the same way that your fall wardrobe adds layers of warmth, your medicine cabinet can layer in levels of protection now too. In the fall months, we focus on immunity, cleansing and preparing ourselves from the upcoming seasonal threats and winter bugs.

I believe in using toxin free, safe products as much as possible, and I like to seek out alternative resources for common issues.

Here’s what’s in my fall medicine chest*.

1. Iodine
An essential mineral that many people are lacking, myself included. Iodine supports thyroid health, an integral piece of overall hormone health.

2. Zinc Lozenges
Here’s an easy way to protect you from the cold that’s circulating around your office. Zinc helps shorten the duration of a cold, and in this lozenge it’s combined with elderberry, a boost for your immunity.

3. Astragalus Herb
Natural protection against the common cold, and should be taken at first signs of congestion, or sneezing. If taken after you’ve gotten a cold, this has been known to shorten its duration—no wonder Astragalus has a following around the world.

4. Green Powder
This one is Greener Grasses™ by Healthforce, a blend of grasses (wheatgrass, barley grass, alfalfa, dandelion) and whole food nutrients to assist you in cleansing and strengthening your system. Note: this does not mean you get to skip your green juice or smoothie. Consider this a supplement.

5. Olive Leaf tonic
Olive Leaf has been around since the time of Hippocrates. It’s a well known tonic that’s anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial. It’s preventative against cold and flu. This is worth trying.

6. Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids
The “good fat” that supports brain health. Be sure to find one that suits your Nutritional Style: Algae Omega comes from algae and is the choice of Modern Vegans and Flexible Vegetarians. Fish Oil is suitable for Healthy Omnivores, and must be of high quality. And for your mini Healthy Omnivores, the Swirl-to-go from Barleans is a great way to get the kids on board. Some Mom’s swear by it to keep their kids balanced and happy.

7. Oscillococcinum
A homeopathic remedy for the flu, and has been around for decades. I have friends and clients who are loyal fans of this, and take at the first sign of fever, chills, or sore throat.

8. Slippery Elm Lozenges
Thayer brand’s natural throat lozenges work, and happen to taste pretty good. Made from slippery elm bark, this herb soothes a sore throat. Great to have on hand if you’re a pubic speaker.

9. Super Echinacea
A preventative herbal remedy that strengthens the immunity. Echinacea has been used for centuries by Native Americans. This is not recommended for those with rheumatoid issues.

10. Rescue Remedy
By Bach Flower Essences, helps with stress relief, and may come in handy this time of year. A friend of mine sprays this in her mouth every time she has to drive over a bridge. I’ve sprayed it in our Australian Shepherd, Bob’s mouth during thunder storms, and in mine before TV appearances. We all think it helps. Especially Bob.

11. Essential Oils
I love the dōTERRA brand line of products. Oregano Oil is germ-destroying, purifying, and anti-bacterial. We use this if someone is feeling under the weather in our house, a few drops in water a few times a day. My family was one of the few on our trip to India who did not catch a bug, I credit the oregano. Elevation blend is perfect for the fall, as days get shorter and our spirits need a lift.

12. Multi-Vitamins
I try to add a multi-vitamin to my regime this time of year to help cope with seasonal stress and less sunlight. Multi’s also bolster my son’s nutrition when school begins. These vitamins, one for women, one for kids, and a packet that mixes with sparkling water, are from whole food sources.

13. Collodial Silver
This ancient remedy strengthens the immune system. I used this when I suffered from Mono. To experience its benefits, add drops to water daily whenever your immune system is challenged.

14. Aloe Vera
Beneficial for effective elimination. Aloe coats the digestive tract and helps heal the gut. I take a 1/4 cup each night before bed. Definitely try this if you suffer from IBS or occasional constipation.

15. Probiotics
A super smart choice right now that adds healthy bacteria to your digestive track, and strengthens your immunity, preparing you for the busy fall and holiday season that’s on its way. Don’t miss out on this one ,for you, your partner, and your kids. We all believe.
