Survival Tips for Turkey Day
Need some tips to get you through the big turkey day?
Contrary to what you might wish for, your family and friends will most likely not be serving grilled veggies, plain, vegan turkey, and “raw” pumpkin pie.
Food is about to take center stage, and old family recipes and labor-intensive preparation will win the day; the creamier, the thicker and the more “breadie” the better.
How to make it through without having to loosen your belt or bloat up the next day?
Here are my best survival tips:
– Eat your normal meals during the day. This will help you avoid extreme hunger later and the feeling that you “saved up” and are entitled to overeat.
-Avoid large portions of the creamy, cheesy, and breadie side dishes, but have a bite or two if you need to. Or pick one of the above to indulge in. This will help avoid the feeling that you “missed out”, and who wants that on Thanksgiving?
– Stick to lean turkey, and use as little gravy as possible. Just a drizzle will do it.
– Load up on the simple veggie dishes and salad items. Fiber goes a long way towards making you feel satisfied.
– Dessert? Try just a sliver, you know that the first few bites taste the best anyway.
– Most importantly, savor every bite. It is a holiday after all; a day when you’re supposed to enjoy yourself.
Relax, love your family and friends and appreciate the goodness and care that went into your food.
Blessings and love to you and yours,
Happy Thanksgiving!
ps those “turkey” looking things on the table above are hats. I’m big on bringing humor into my holidays. 🙂

Hi Holli,
I am so thankful for this time of year and the people and animals that are in my life. I realize that this is the time of year that people indulge in all kinds of rich foods, and gain extra weight in the process. It really is a strange tradition. Since I have learned about the horrible treatment of animals I have been able to enjoy the Thanksgiving tradition by making my own stuffed tofu and seitan and nothing is harmed in the process. These plant-based foods are delicious and nutritious. I never feel “crummy” after a meal as I feed my body healthy foods that it is intended to consume. I feel this way of living is living in a way as the old saying goes “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Animals are other sentient beings, so I encourage humans to take the pill of compassion and do no harm in your kitchen. You can still have all of your favorite foods, just modified for a healthier, more compassionate and sustainable planet.
Best to you Holli and all of your followers.
Kindly,
Rhonda
