what you can learn from cancer patients
One of my good friends asked the other day, over tea, why my new website doesn’t talk more about Cancer? How can nutrition and food be stylish and fun, when I work with so many critical patients?
She glanced up at me, over her berry breakfast, and wondered why I don’t talk more about illness and sickness, and the sadness that I must meet each day?
And she inquired gently, what about your Cancer patients?
I partner with one of the top Breast Cancer centers in the Washington, DC area. They refer their patients to me, women who have just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Women who are often reeling, still, from their news.
My friend was curious. I understood why. If you haven’t dealt with Cancer, or a serious illness, you might wonder too. Maybe you assume that nutrition coaching or analyzing one’s diet and food is for vain women who want to look good. It’s all about being skinny, after all. Isn’t it?
Not in my world. It’s about feeling great.
It’s about reducing inflammation; aches, pains, sinus, infertility, migraines, auto-immune issues, and even the big C. Cancer. It’s about the energy and awesomeness that you feel after changing up your diet, and discovering the foods that are inflaming you and keeping YOU from the life you love.
My clients that have been diagnosed with Cancer are not defined by their disease.
When I first developed a relationship with this particular center, (having happened organically through some dear clients) I asked the doctor in charge. Fill me in. What can I not say?
She responded, teach them to eat well. No one does. They don’t know. Share what you do, what you know, and what you believe in. That’s what they need.
The women with Cancer are optimistic, in fact, they are the MOST optimistic group of women I’ve ever met. Beautiful mothers. Strong, successful business women. Achievers. Do-gooders. Wonder Women. All.
And they’re ready to do whatever they can for their health.
As their nutrition coach, it thrills me to have clients who are ready to go. Pedal to the metal. Vroom-Vroom. With love and laughs. I adore them.
SO, yes, I work with some sick people. Health is like that. And I will continue to project health, ease and grace. Because that’s my wish for you, and yours.
It’s also my wish that you DON’T wait until you have a serious illness to go for it. Don’t be one of those people who say, if I had Cancer, I’d definitely come to you! If I had Cancer, I’d definitely drink green juice! If I had Cancer..
Well, here’s to you never having it.
With love,
H.

This morning I ate buckwheat waffle with coconut oil and almond butter - but only after my lemon water with cayenne pepper :).
H- I love that you acknowledged the fact that you don’t have to focus on sickness (or fear) to accent wellness (or love). You yourself are the example. Here’s to being sexy just for feeling good! XO! C

Interesting Holli. This subject just came up for me on Sunday. After hearing so many prayer requests for people dealing with cancer, I was talking to my children about it. Yes, eating healthy can lead to weight loss and increased energy – but it’s really about health. It’s about prevention and for some it’s about healing. My daughter and I filmed a short video to announce that a portion of the proceeds from the upcoming Renew Cleanse that I lead will go to CancerCare.org. Together we can make a difference!

This morning I ate parsley, nectarine, flax, chia smoothie.
This branch of your work must be so meaningful, Holli. Creating better health is indeed not all about your looks – although it can certainly improve it! I loved this post, and it really resonated with me as I know through others so dear to me the journey through a cancer diagnosis. So glad to know there are people like you to understand and help them. Great job!
